Pulp and root canal treatment may seem a bit scary because of the many myths that continue to circulate about these procedures. However, our SmileTown dentists are here to set the record straight by reminding you and your child why there is nothing to be afraid of. When a tooth becomes increasingly painful, an infection of the pulp is likely to be the problem, which means pulp or root canal treatment is required. To find out which procedure is right for your child, call our office to schedule an emergency appointment.

What Happens During a Root Canal?

If your child has a permanent tooth and the pulp is infected, we may suggest a root canal. This process involves administering anaesthesia to numb the tooth and its surrounding area before creating a small opening in the crown to access the infected tissue. After clearing out bacteria from the canals and removing the pulp, the tooth will be sealed to prevent future infection. After a few weeks, a customized dental crown can be secured over the tooth so that it can continue to function normally over time.

What is Pulp Therapy?

Pulp therapy is similar to a root canal but is primarily used on baby teeth. Our team will eliminate the pain your child is experiencing by either removing the infected pulp from the chamber in the crown (pulpotomy) or removing all of the pulp tissue from the crown and canals (pulpectomy). We’ll then clean the interior of the tooth and fill it with a biocompatible solution before topping it with a dental crown.
